This unique piece of furniture breathes the rich history of the Silk Road:
- Origin & Age: Crafted around 1890 – 1920 (Late Qing / Early Republic period) in the historic Xinjiang region (Northwest China). Thanks to the dry desert climate, the solid wood has been exceptionally well preserved.
- Original Function: In traditional Xinjiang households, these low, elongated cabinets served as storage chests or kang sideboards. They were used to safely store precious textiles, clothing, and valuable family belongings.
- Cultural Fusion: The unique design showcases a fabulous fusion of Central Asian (Uyghur) geometric carving motifs and traditional Chinese woodworking.
Rich Symbolism:
- Geometric Star & Floral Rosettes: In Silk Road tradition, these repeating carved patterns symbolize cosmic harmony, order, and protection against bad fortune.
- Greek Meander Border (Huiwen / Wanzi): The continuous, unbroken geometric line along the bottom frame represents '10,000 years of uninterrupted luck, abundance, and longevity' in Asian furniture art.
- Hand-Forged Hardware: Finished with the original, robust forged metal ring handles.
